A short, but
extremely challenging climb up a hidden slot passageway.
Along the way, you will need to navigate up numerous dry
waterfalls, squeeze through narrow passageways, and traverse
around many natural obstacles. Located inside beautiful
Sandstone Canyon, this concealed gem will definitely provide
you a stimulating and exciting contest.
Take
extreme caution when entering the lair of the Basilisk.
Of the many fearsome beasts and monsters that roam the
desert, there is none more curious or more deadly than the
Basilisk. Known also as the King of Serpents, this snake can
reach a gigantic size and live many hundreds of years. A
magical creature born from a chicken's egg, and hatched
beneath a toad, its methods of killing are most wondrous. For
aside from its deadly and venomous fangs, the Basilisk has a
murderous stare, and all who are fixed with the beam of its
eye shall suffer instant death.
Given an adequate food supply, a Basilisk can reach a length of
over 50 feet, and can live for at least 900 years. The Basilisk
enjoys feasting on most varieties of humans, including
GeoCachers.
We were extremely lucky to have found this concealed den. Basilisk
breeding has been outlawed since medieval times and in the present
day falls under the Ban on Experimental Breeding. Dark wizards have
rarely broken this law, since only a Parselmouth can control a
basilisk. We suggest you study up, BEFORE entering the
Basilisk’s burrow.
Hints From Harry on How to Slay this
Basilisk
1. The Starting
point and parking can be found at N 32.59.187 W 116.13.508. This is
just over 13 miles from the end of the pavement at Split Mtn. Road.
(Special thanks to Team Gecko for mentioning this starting spot in
their log entry on their way to the Sandstone Turnaround
cache.)
2. 4WD is recommended but not required (depending on road
conditions) to get to this point. If you go further up Sandstone
Canyon then 4WD is definitely required.
3. Pay close attention to the Terrain rating – this adventure is
short in distance, but very challenging in terrain.
4. We found that coming back down was actually easier than going
up.
5. Pee before you start.
6. Definitely NOT for small kids. Medium sized, adventurous girls
did great, and had a blast.
Good Luck!
