The Indiana Spirit Quest series of geocaches will take you to a number of historic cemeteries built by Hoosier Pioneers. In just over a year and a half, the quest has grown to over two hundred seventy caches hidden in twenty-seven Indiana counties, and the hiders have grown to eleven cacher teams, most of which are composed of dogs and their humans. Over 5,000 finds have been logged.

INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST #262

”Jamestown Confederate Again"

Welcome to the Jamestown I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Jackson Township, Boone County. This is a fairly large, active cemetery with many graves from the second half of the 19th Century. It is located along State Road 75 in the town of Jamestown in the Northeast Quarter of Section 10, Township 17 North, Range 2 West, Second Principal Meridian of the Public Land Survey System. Jamestown was established in 1830 just a few days before Boone County was established. Jamestown was the original seat of Boone County. Lebanon became the county seat in 1832.

Here is the tombstone for William N. Mitchell, Company B, 2nd Battalion, North Carolina Infantry, Confederate States of America. The 2nd was formed in the fall of 1861 at Garysburg, NC. They were captured at the Battle of Roanoke Island, exchanged, then served from Gettysburg to Cold Harbor. They surrendered at the end of the war with 3 officers and 49 men. Mr. Mitchell appears to be one of the lucky few to make it through.

This is the oldest gravestone we came across. Marshall G. Williamson died December 26, 1865 at the age of 20 years, 7 months and 5 days. Was he a Civil War veteran? We found no records for him. Maybe the Jamestown American Legion post could help. Information from the LDS Church shows that Mr. Williamson was born in Boone County in 1845. His parents were both from Virginia.

This is Captain William Baringer from Company A, 66th Illinois Infantry. The group was originally organized in Missouri in the fall of 1861 as Birge's Western Sharpshooters. Their designation was changed to the 66th in 1862. They saw service in Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, Virginia and Washington, D.C. There are many other Civil War veterans buried here.

This is Spanish American War veteran Tom Culbeson. Take a look around and you will find lots of 20th Century veterans also.

As of August 30, 2015 the cache container is a small camoed plastic container.
