A fairly short and easy regular cache involving a slight climb to the top of a hill.
Up in the hills between Johnstone and Howwood lies the site of a vast hill fort sitting on top of Walls Hill. Although nothing remains of the fort it is obvious that this location would have afforded 360° views of the surrounding countryside.
It has been suggested that this was a Celtic “Oppidium” (This word believed to be of Latin origin and was used by Julius Caesar in his writings to describe the kind of towns or cities which many of the Celtic Peoples of his time inhabited). It was also possibly the capital of the Damnonii (This is the tribe of people who lived in the central part of Scotland – around what is today Strathclyde - who were conquered by the Romans and whose territory was occupied by the Roman Army before they retreated further south to the line of Hadrian’s Wall.)
The Cache: Park at N 55° 47.405, W004° 32.056 – ensuring you do not block the gate. Enter and continue up the hill to the site of the fort. Cross the stile at N 55° 47.741,
W 004° 32.044 and bear left towards the rock face overlooking the pond. The cache is situated on the most scenic place to take in the views. For the trig point collectors continue around the pond for about ¼ mile to find the point overlooking Skiff Wood.
This cache has been named after our dear "old" friends from Team Alexs80.
