Geocache Description:

EdwardsClan's 4th cache is another easy offset multi in a interesting little hidden backwater of Warrandyte...

Whipstick Gully was the centre of attention in the 1890's when it was the main goldmining area in Warrandyte.
This cache is an easy offset multi that will bring to your attention some of the remanants of the goldmining industry in the area.

At the published coordinates you will find the entrance to "Victory Mine". Despite the name, after the mine stopped operating, it had a somewhat ignominious ending having a truckload of "night soil" tipped into the shaft. Ironically this came back to bite the residents of Warrandyte on the rear-end somewhat when massive floods in 1934 probably caused the deposits that had been placed in the mineshaft to seep out and required the locals to find somewhere else to dump their ... er...

"Shine your buttons with brasso...
It's only three ha-pennys a tin...
you buy it or nick it from Woolies...
but make sure you rub it well in, well in..."

The answers to the following questions can all be found by reading the signs from the beginning of the park up to the sign at Victory Mine.

At the entrance to the park there was once a poppet head and you had to find out when was it built. But as that has now gone, your task has changed. As you entered the park you would have seen a three sided structure with information panels in it. Read the panels and find the oldest newspaper article quoted from "The Evelyn Observer". In what year was that article originally printed? (A)

All homes in Whipstick Gully were destroyed during bushfires. In what year did this happen? (B)

In what year did the Mines Department give permission for night soil to be dumped in the mine shaft. (C)

In what year was the first gold discovery made at Andersons Creek? (D)

To find the cache location:

Subtract ((B-A)+9)/1000 from the Easterly coordinate minutes
Add ((C-D)+23)/1000 to the Southerly coordinate minutes

It's not far...

FOOTNOTE:
