Geocache Description:

This cache is named after the lost village of Mille Roches of which very little remains but there is much more information at the above website. The Lost Villages Historical Society website will be a great tool when searching for the LVHS series of caches placed along what is now Lake St Lawrence. Each cache will in some way be historically connected to the immediate area where it is placed.

The cache is on the front of W 1/2, Lot 25, Conc. 2, 4th Range (ie 2nd conc. from river but on end of 4th conc. of Cornwall Twp. so-called because of the way the river bulges to the north.) Hydro obtained it from the Price family (two elderly unmarried brothers at the time).

Hector Manson purchased W 1/2, Lot 25, 2nd Conc., 4th Range, Cornwall Twp. from Daniel Campbell - February 20, 1816. This farm was divided and willed to sons John, Daniel & William in 1849. William sold his 1/3 (this is the part where the quarry was and from which some of the stone for the original Cornwall Canal was taken) and Daniel willed his 1/3 to John in a will dated July 22, 1850 and registered September 10, 1858.

The easiest way to start this easy cache is to enter Guindon Park near N45.02.020, W74.50.070 (A). Great coords and at this location a great overall view of the area today. Above is an old aerial photo of Mille Roches used for reference.

The posted coords are for a spot (B on photo) on what used to be Cornwall Centre Road (west of today’s Pioneer Corner’s) which ran into the town of Mille Roches prior to inundation in 1958. With little difficulty you can still see the few remaining fragments of asphalt showing through the encroaching overgrowth in front of the farm in the old photo. The date of the photo is unknown but believed to be the late 1940s. The same area today has drastically changed and a comparison can be seen in this (dark line) growing a little further out behind the barn. The cache is hidden between two of the eight trees and under the....the one thing here that will stop you from walking around some of the trees and between a rock and a...well another rock and they provide a nice crevice just big enough for a regular cache. I covered the container with a sprinkling of leaves in a vane attempt match the camo job on a cache container meant for another location. Your goal is to project yourself to this spot from the past and then physically get to it in the present. No bushwacking necessary, no insurmountable obstacles.

In placing this cache I found the area to be busier than I’d like it so a bit of stealth might be required. Cache contains log book, pencil, sharpener and an assortment of trade items and some Lost Villages Historical Society info pamphlets.
