Geocache Description:

This cache is located in the SW section of Elysian Park. It can be reached from a fire road off of Scott Ave. From Scott, it is a leisurely stroll up a paved road and then backtrack onto a dirt path. Or you can turn it into a 2.5 terrain and take the path up the hill shortly after you pass the Scott gate. I prefer to take the long, gradual way in and the short steep way out. If you look to the north east while walking up, you should be able to spot "Space Station Grace" in the distance. I contacted the Echo Park Historical Society to garner some information about the remarkable church on the other side of the fence. The Society's president was able to find a news article from the Times, Dec 1957. His response, in part--- The building is a church, St. Andrew's, that is part of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The church was dedicated that year (1957) and founded by Ukrainian immigrants, many of whom had been refugees who fled their country during World War II. The story said the refugees had been persecuted by the Nazis and Russian Communists. The congregation of 85 families had been worshipping in a rented hall in another section of Echo Park before they bought an "outdated" mansion on Sutherland Street. They raised $20,000 to renovate and remodel the home into a church, doing much of the work themselves. The current structure you see with elaborate domes was actually built in the late 1980s The cache is a small plastic box. It is near a prickly plant, so use caution when retrieving and replacing. There is also cactus in the area, so keep a watch on kidlets and pups. And pay close attention to the Street Cleaning parking restrictions on Scott. There are also parking restrictions whenever there is an event at Dodger Stadium, so read those signs carefully folks. Today I replaced the cache (Aug 13, 2020), and I noticed there is now a swing not far from the cache. It looks like a lovely place to take a moment to enjoy the view.
