A waterproof match container at the coords of a "locationless" cache. Beware, may freeze into place. A rock may break it loose.
Watch for poison ivy! Park within 50 feet of the cache in an off-road parking spot. Look for a relatively ivy free way that stretches a little south then toward the river.
On 1/21/05, Haffy6 from Maine contacted me about participating with him in getting a find out of Cruso’s locationless cache. That cache is, "Where's In A Name?": waypoint: GC3153. The way it works is, Haffy6 converted his handle into a coordinate using the keys of a phone pad and used that as a coord that circles the earth. He arbitrarily chose to make it a latitude and decided to look for someone in the Midwest that would be willing to find a longitude along his line of latitude. That’s where I came in. I looked at topozone.com and discovered that his lat went through the Amish farm country near my town here but I decided instead to choose a location in Black Hawk Park, also near me. In order for both of us to get credit for the cache, I had to photograph my GPS unit showing his lat coord to the hundredth of a minute in the picture at the location I chose.
I debated a great deal about where to take the picture since I really wanted to show an Amish farm in the background. What made up my mind was this: I decided to do a twist to this locationless cache by hiding a real cache at the chosen location for the virtual. Since the Amish would be very suspicious of people wandering around on foot in their territory, and would, as a consequence, probably take the cache, I decided to hide it in Black Hawk Park instead.
Whenever I think of Black Hawk Park I remember Mattie Lou Zabel, one of my aunts. She went for a walk there, or at least that’s what the police think. They found her car with her purse was still in it. Supper was started and yet unfinished. That was there more than 24 years ago. She was never seen again. Her disappearance is an unsolved mystery to this day.
I hope that if anyone else decides to try the virtual cache “Where’s in a Name?” and ask the co-participant to find a place to plant a real cache, that you will title the cache, “Locationless Cache Cache X”, the X standing for the handle of the person that contacted you followed by your handle, like the name I chose for this one. I am hoping that this twist to this cache may spread throughout the world.
My handle, “Iowa Tom,” translates to 4692866. I find it easiest to start with the decimal coordinate 46.92866 then convert it to degrees minutes decimal minutes. Now I will have to try to locate someone that will find a new cache location for me!
I am curently trying to get a participant who lives in Washington State. When moving along my latitude across the US via Topozone maps I discovered that it crossed the "Home for the Aged" in Jamestown, SD. My daughter, who kids me about being over 50 got a kick out of that.
