Geocache Description:

This five stage multi-cache is located in the Bridgeport Cemetery, which is near where route 131 (old route 73) ends at route 50 in Bridgeport, WV. It is intended to provide a somewhat challenging but historical and, we hope, interesting mini-tour of this beautiful cemetery.

We suggest you allow at least 2 hours to complete this cache, but if you rush through without taking time to see the sites, it probably can be done in less time. To make it worthwhile, we suggest you take your time and look around even more than needed to find the cache. Keep in mind that the cemetery closes at dark and no one is to be inside the gates after this.

Stage One: You need to locate 2 grave markers at this site and use the information on them to get the coordinates for the following stage.
1) Joseph Johnson, who was the only man west of the Alleghenies to serve as governor of Virginia. Remember, this area was part of the state of Virginia until 1863. Once you locate this marker, note the year of his birth and subtract 1276 from it to obtain ABC.
2) Locate a monument in the same area dedicated to the founder of Boothsville, WV. with quite a cheerful epitaph and subtract 1405 from his year of death to get DEF.

Take some time to look around this, the oldest, part of the cemetery where you can also find a soldier named Joseph Davisson who was at Valley Forge during the winter of 1777-78 with General George Washington and who married the cousin of a famous poet. You can also find the sight of the original Simpson Creek Baptist Church and meeting house built in 1770 along with many other old gravesites.

Stage Two: N 39* 17. ABC’ W080* 14. DEF’
You are looking for the small in-ground grave marker of a Pony Express rider and cousin of a famous American writer and humorist. You will recognize the name when you see it. When you find the marker, subtract 1154 from his year of birth to obtain GHI and 1608 from his year of death to obtain JKL.
This is also a beautiful area of the cemetery, although not nearly as old as the first stage.

Stage Three: N 39* 17. GHI’ W080* 14. JKL’
At this stage, you are looking for a micro cache containing information of interest about this area of the cemetery (we encourage you to read it and enjoy looking around some here too) as well as the coordinates for the 4th stage.

Stage Four: This stage is another micro that contains nothing more than directions to the final cache sight. We thought the location was interesting though, which is why we included it.

Stage Five: The final cache is a clear plastic container with a log and a variety of trinkets to trade..

We decided to reestablish a cache in this cemetery as many people have been very supportive of doing so. We hope you enjoy it, and we are open to any comments or suggestions.
Please, if you have any issues or problems with the cache let us know so we can try to address them.
