Geocache Description:

"Mamie Thurman's Secret" is a multi-cache beginning in a cemetery and ending on the top of a mountain with a fantastic view. There are benchmarks on this mountain that can be located, too.



Who is Mamie Thurman? She lived in Logan, West Virginia, and was murdered on June 21, 1932, at age 31. Her body was later found some 10 miles away, thrown over Trace Mountain along 22 Mine Road near Holden, WV. Although someone was swiftly convicted of this terrible crime, it is commonly believed that her real killer was never identified. Legend has it that her ghost still roams these woods and offers a revengeful cry for justice. Contributing further to her mystery is that her grave location has never been found. What is the secret about her death? In your search for this cache, you will pass over some of the same ground that she and her murderer trod.

DIRECTIONS

NOTE - I've modified this cache somewhat since someone stole the final stash - container and all . Consequently, I've added another leg to this caching adventure in order to provide better yahoo-protection. This now makes this cache a three-part multi, but the difficulty/terrain remains the same.

The first leg of this cache consists of a micro-cache at N 37°49.497' W 81°57.792', but with sparse satellite coverage at times. It is near an old run-down cemetery where Mamie’s unmarked grave is thought to be. This cemetery is located south of Logan off State Route 10 at the end of a small paved road, named Weeping Hollow Road. You can park at N 37°49.492' W 81°57.802'. An alternate way to locate this micro-cache is to proceed 42 feet on a 60° magnetic bearing from the parking coordinates. Remember to bring a pencil and paper to make note of the given coordinates for the second leg.

The second leg is located atop of Trace Mountain, also known locally as, "22 Mountain." There are benchmarks in this area, so if you're interested, do your homework and enjoy some benchmark hunting while you're in the area. The final leg of this cache lies nearby. To reach the second and final legs, travel U.S. Route 119 to the Logan/Mingo county divide and turn onto the Wood Products Industrial Park Road (22 Mine Road.) You’re on your own from there. The swag is hidden in an ammo box. Perhaps you can reveal some clues about Mamie, never before known. Have fun !
