Angus Glens - Tommy Thumb (where are you?) Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Team Clova: As 54kgx2 says it looks like this one needs a bulldozer to get to now - Its an ammo box so a metal detector might manage to find it. Next time we are up at the dam we'll see if we can retrieve it

Geocache Description:

The main Angus Glens have often been described as being similar to the fingers of the right hand reaching towards the Cairngorms. This cache is the part of a series covering each "finger".

This cache takes you to the Backwater Reservoir in Glen Isla.

This reservoir was created in the 1960s to supply the water needs of Angus and Eastern Perthshire. When it was constructed it was one of the largest earth embankment reservoirs in Europe. It is certainly an impressive sight as you drive up towards it. The reservoir is also unique in that it was the first British reservoir to be constructed using a method of chemical grout injected into the glacial bedrock, in order to prevent leakage under the dam.

For the statisticians amongst you, the dam is 43metres high, and approx 500metres long. The reservoir length is 3.2 Km and it can hold 25million cubic metres of water. The maximum daily demand on the water supply is around 100,000cubic metres, so by doing the maths the reservoir can last for a "dry spell" of 250 days.

Parking for the cache is at the picnic area / toilets at N56 42.980  W003 13.517. The route to the cache is along a tarmac roadway suitable for wheelchairs/pushchairs until the last 50 yards or so.

The container is an ammo box containing all the usual goodies. Please replace it as close as you can to its original location to prevent it standing in pools of water.

Please note: Due to the terrain you may find deviations in the GPSr readings. A good indication of the direction to cache can be found while moving along the tarmac road.                           .
