AKRAMITIS - altitude 821m.- is the second highest mountain on
the island of Rhodes.( I think that is what the name expresses: Middle Top )
Atavyros is by far the highest mountain on Rhodes: altitude 1216 m.
Both are only accessible by foot!
This -in our opinion- justifies even more placing a cache on both tops.
Startingpoint: N 36 09.063 E 27 46.045 , elevation
437 m.
This is at the cemetery of the village of Siana, about 1 km. west
,down the main road.
(We used the german Rother Wanderfuhrer Rhodos, routenr: 35. But with this
description it might be possible without it!)
Some 50 m. before the cemetery but opposite from it there is a
little dirt road. Go onto it, and almost directly to the right, along a
fence and after may be 100 m. pass through the gate.
Follow the cairns/Steinmanner and -but less- red dots uphill. The
first few minutes you may have to look good, but then the path and the cairns
become clearer. Keep on climbing.
The inclination is rather tiresome, sometimes even strenuous. So do
not start too fast.
From time to time there is some shade, but never longtime.
At about 2/3 -when the inclination becomes friendly- the path encircles
a lower part. On your right hand and above you can see a former fireman
lookout. It is abandoned nowadays.
This is your goal, but follow the encircling path: a short cut is too
steep.
Just behind the building you will find the topsign at N 36
09.536 E 27 45.806, elevation 821 m.
Duration: about 90 minutes.
The cache is hidden at elevation 817 m., bearing: 270° and
distance: 12 m. from the topsign.
Please hide it well again!!
Bring your own pencil to write your log !
BTW: !!! If you do not use a guidebook and/or good map: go
down the same way, and do not go up when the clouds are low !!!
If you do have a guidebook: be carefull.
Enjoy your hike.
Small note on cache maintenance: We met a dutch couple living nearby Rhodes city, and owning a restaurant there.
They are our contact for cache maintenance.
