Join the Hampton Roads Geocaching Group for their Second Annual Picnic and Cache Dash.

Join the Hampton Roads Geocaching Group for their Second Annual Picnic and Cache Dash.

When: Saturday, September 18th (the one year anniversary of Hurricane Isabel)
Time: 9:00 am until Sunset
Where: Newport News Park Shelters 10, 11, and 12
Who: Open to all geocachers, families, and anyone interested in geocaching
What: A social get together to meet fellow cachers, exchange stories, learn about different aspects of caching, exchange TB’s, oh yeah, and some caching thrown in there too….

Newport News Park is an 8,000 acre park with two fresh water reservoirs is one of the largest municipal parks east of the Mississippi. It features bicycle and boat rental, 188-site campground, golf course, horse show arena, interpretive programs, wildlife rehabilitation center, picnic shelters, playground, restrooms, stages, 30 miles of hiking trails, 5-mile mountain bike trail, and 5.3 mile bikeway, picnic shelters, and much much more!!! Personal boats (no gas motors) may be launched for a $4.00 fee.

Targeted timeline of events (subject to change of course, as things usually do….)
9:00 – Sign in / Introductions / Hanging out
10:00 - Release correct coords for new caches - NOTE: Booklets will be handed out with all of the park caches, and a lot of the other local caches. The cache pages will be included in this booklet!
10:00 – 5:30 – Caching, Caching, and more caching
1:00 – until - Running the grill and chowing down (Hamburgers and Hot dogs will be provided)
5:30 – Door prizes (must be present to win) / Special Recognitions / More Group Photos/Chinese Auction/ Raffle Drawing
After dark – Hanging out around a campfire in Loop “B” of the campground

A Chinese Auction will be held at 6:00 p.m. The auction will be a hurricane preparedness theme with a limit of $10.00. If you’d like to participate, bring a wrapped item, and write a note to hint what’s inside. Be creative and have fun with it!

Also, there will be a TB exchange table to drop off and pick up travel bugs to help them towards their goals.

How can you help??? Here are a few suggestions:

  • Bring a pot luck dish to share
  • Consider contributing condiments (ie: ketchup, mustard, buns of all types, etc…)
  • Consider contributing paper products (ie: plates, napkins, utensils, etc…)
  • Consider contributing coolers full of drinks (ie: water, sodas, etc…)
  • Consider contributing charcoal for the grills
  • Donate a door prize - anything geocaching related, or hurricane related would be good.

Attention Camping Cachers!
We have taken the liberty of reserving close to 20 camping sites at Newport News Park. We have scoped out and secured the best sites on the best loop (loop ”B”). In the event that you will need to secure a site for Friday and/or Saturday night please contact gecko757. Campsites are first come first serve. All sites are full service and will accommodate either a camper, a pop-up, or two tents. All sites have a maximum of 5 people or 1 family per site..
