Big Fish - The Adventure is in Telling of the Tale Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

tneigel: Well, it finally happened. For some reason the granite in this area has been volatile. Moving and slipping. Making this a very difficult cache indeed. So many tectonic changes taking place, its a wonder there are so many strange creatures reported and the journeys have been varied and descriptions nothing less then incredible.

Last report was of construction in the area. I went to check it out and service the cache. I was smart to have my hip waders with me and the 30 foot of rope in the car was just enought. The granite has opened to at least 30 feet wide and the water from the surrounding low lands is gushing in. Much like the great falls of Patterson!

I rigged the rope with a few trusty bowline knots and barely made it across the crevase. There, perched on the edge of dissaster was the original tree and the cache placement. Leaning over as it was, I figured it didn't have long to go, before it plunged into the depths and the cache would be lost forever.

Thinking I should get back to the car for my maintenance gear, I realize the knots were slipping on my rope and I had seconds to swing across to the other side. Just as I got to the other side, hugh burst of steam shot up from the casum. I watched in horror as the little evergreen holding the cache, and "Big Fish" himself, were lost forever....

Had I been quicker to maintain and move, or wise enough to have removed it while standing there, at least the cache container would be safe, for historical purposes.

However, all is lost. All remnants of the cache are gone, and all that was once a quiet little area is changed. Earth movers and hundred ton loads of gravel are being poured into the hugh crevice. Soon, all evidence of the prehistoric type area will be gone. All the creatures have dispersed and nature, once again, take over on its own schedule and changes what it will change.
We have only to wittness such changes or have been lucky enough to have seen this area before the change of time, and change of the earth, has all but removed this place from history. Only those of you that have visited, can hold the memory of this place in your minds, and remember....
Thank you all.

The Hunt:
The access roads to get to this cache don't go through. It may look that way on the map, but there is no way you are going to get through, so its the route you take that will be the key.

My Journey:
My journey took me over bumpy roads, and round and round in Ccircles. I went back out and attempted to come in the other way and still went round and round in circles.

What I encountered along the way:
I noticed a "Flying Squirrel" sailing around the trees. I said squirrel, "Which way to the cache?" The squirrel flew in circles over my head laughing and laughing and laughing. I didn't think it was at all that funny you see. I said again to the squirrel, "Which way to the cache?" He laughed and laughed. As he flew away, I heard him answer, "Why,,, the cache is in the Bank." I didn't think that was funny at all, not at all. I continued driving down the road.

I had turned my car around to come in the "other way." There was a farmer plowing the field and I said Hi. He waved back and came closer to talk. He was a strang looking fellow. He had a tall straw hat, a long pipe and no shoes. His feet were very large and a bit dirty. It was "Froto" the hobbit. He smiled at me as if he knew me all his life. I said Hello Froto and shook his hand. I asked him where the cache is located? He said "I have a secret for you. Take this ring, and put it in the cache." Wow, but how do I find the cache. He said, "This ring will guide your journey to the Double Ring. There, all your questions will be answered." Froto got back on his tractor and drove away. I was never to see him again.

I followed Froto's advise. I searched and searched and before my eyes, I realized I had reached the "Double Ring." I drove and drove and drove. Around and around and around. No matter how fast I drove, no matter how far I went, I ended up in the same spot.

Once I gave up and parked the car, I must have spent 25 minutes trying to figure out where to go. I was all along. Only the vultures were flying overhead. They vulture told me, "Go way back into the woods. Trust me and I will watch out for you." I think the vulture was thinking about eating my eye balls first, then finishing me out there in the woods.

A little red-winged blackbird landed nearby and said, "Hey you, come over here to this tree and I will give you a hint." He gave me the best hint I had all day long.....Sure enough, he was right. They say red-winged blackbirds never lie. Especially those that talk.
