Geocache Description:

Easy to find at the Leonardtown wharf area, this cache is a veritable treasure trove of artistic impressions!

The Potomac Portfolio is waiting for you! It is unlike most caches in that there are no specific dollar store items to trade. It wants something more personal - a piece of your soul! Art is a reflection of the artist's soul and this cache is a collection of art. Not the art made by famous people, but art created by those who pay a visit to the cache.

The Leonardtown Wharf area has a lot of rich history which isn't evident from its current condition. When you visit you will see some old buildings, a closed boat ramp, burned down piers and maybe a little construction. But a hundred years ago this wharf was home to a bustling community. Giant paddlewheel boats would ply their way down the Potomac River and into Breton Bay, bringing shows to the farmers and watermen of St. Mary's County. About 20 years ago, fire destroyed a restaurant built on the piers and the wharf area has remained about the same since that time. Over the past decade the Leonardtown area has seen a vibrant regrowth. New businesses have come to the area as the local naval base has expanded. Now the attention has turned to the wharf area and a plan is in place to convert this area to include public parks, businesses and upscale residences.

Your mission as a geocacher is to record your artistic impression of the wharf. As time goes on, the portfolio will show changes as the wharf is developed. I know, I know, you think you're not an artist. That's OK - neither am I. We're not looking for Da Vinci or Michaelangelo, we're looking for you - the average geocacher. The cache is a Rubbermaid container. Inside you will find a log book, art supplies including a sketch pad and colored pencils, and a Portfolio book which holds completed artwork. Take the cache to some place comfortable like one of the park benches or even your car, sit back, pick what you think would make a nice scene, and draw it in the sketch book. Sign your artwork with your geohandle, rip it out of the sketch book and place it in the blue Portfolio. Keep an eye out for muggles when you carefully replace the cache in its hiding spot!

From time to time I will check on the cache and take photos of your artwork to post on the GC site. PLEASE don't just sign the log without leaving a drawing!!! That defeats the purpose of the cache!

Have fun and I'm looking forward to seeing your artwork.
