Terje Vigen Imenes-Sadelen Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Makuta Teridax: Hi

I have earlier asked about the plans for this cache and a time frame. That is now more than two months ago. While I think we should reserve this area for this cache, we can’t do so forever for a disabled cache. Due to lack of response from the owner, this cache is now archived, so that someone else can place a cache in the area, and geocachers can once again enjoy visiting this location. Also, if it hasn’t been done already, please pick up any remaining cache bits as soon as possible.

If the owner wants it reopened, that is possible if the cache listing still satisfies the requirement/guidelines.

(This reviewer note is in English so non-Norwegian geocachers and cache reviewers will understand it.)

Kind regards

Geocache Description:

This cache is a part of a serie, with theme from the Norwegian poem Terje Vigen by Henrik Ibsen.

Hele Diktet kan du lese her.

den stærke, modige mand;
den fjerde morgen, da solen randt,
han skimted en tåget rand.
Det var ikke flygtende skyer han så,
det var fjelde med tinder og skar;
men højt over alle åsene lå

The poem Terje Vigen by Henrik Ibsen, is in short about a Fisherman/farmer during the Napoleon-wars, that rowed/sailed to denmark to get barley to feed himself and his family. On the way back, he was discovered by an english navy-ship, cought, and sendt to prison in England. After he was released, he went home to find his wife and daughter had starved to death. Later in his work as a pilot, met the captain from the navy-ship in trouble at sea. Terje did not get his revenge, but he got peace whith himself and his god.

Here you can read the whole poem
The poem is highly recommended. Even when it is 32 verses, it is easy to read and exciting.

The truth of the story is a bit unsure, but one Terje Vigen lived in the area that time. But as a myth, and a hero-story for Sørlandet, the poem and Terje Vigen lives further.

In the poem, several places in the Grimstad-region is mentioned, and this series of caches will take you there.

The fourteenth verse goes:
He slaved on the thwart for three nights and days,
that brave and powerful man;
the fourth, at dawn, by sun's first rays,
a blurred, misty line to scan.
It wasn't the skeltering clouds he spied,
it was mountain and summit and brae:
but high above the ridges' pride,
Imenes-Saddle, blue and wide.
He knew then just where he lay.

The Imenes-saddle was in the days of Terje Vigen a well known sea-mark. Det special saddle.shape was easily recognised from far away at sea. And with its heigth of 175 meters, it was very visual from sea, even, if it was 4 kmm from sea. Even today with GPS, and good maps, the saddle is a well known point.

The home of Terje Vigen was at Hesnes, placed straight out from the Imenes-saddle. He could therefor aim directly at the saddle to come home.

Park at N58 21.081 E8 31.378, and follow the ath to the top. At the end the path is very steep, and it can be very slippery in rain. At the top there is a lot of big oaks, so the view is limited.
