Geocache Description:

An easy to moderate hike of two miles on Cemetery Loop and Long Branch Trail. You will follow an old wagon road and single track trail which led to a former pioneer settlement and McCall Cemetery. On this part of the trail we saw no signs of the pioneer settlement.

Directions: From the intersection of Hwy 64 and Hwy 276 in Pisgah Forest, drive north on Hwy 276 for 5.2 miles, then turn left onto Forest Service Road 475. When the road turns to dirt drive approximately 4.2 miles and you will see a parking area on the left side of the road. To the left of the parking area you will see a gate and trail sign for the cemetery loop trail.

From the parking area take the Cemetery loop Trail behind the gate. The trail sign shows a yellow blaze but the only yellow blaze we saw was on the gate itself.

Less than 300 feet from the parking area you will come to a “Y” intersection on the wagon road, take the fork to the right. Continue along the wagon road to you come to another"Y" intersection, again take the right fork and continue along to McCall Cemetery which will be on the left side of the trail. The distance to the cemetery from the parking area is 1.03 mile. The cemetery is at the half way point. The easiest route is to continue on making the loop.

A little past the cemetery the trail intersects AND also changes to the orange blazed Long branch Trail. At this junction CONTINUE STRAIGHT AHEAD on Long Branch trail and you will loop back just beyond the parking area on FS 475. The trail sign shows Long Branch Trail more difficult but we found it as easy as the previous section. There are no steep sections on any part of the trail.

This cache was placed beyond the head stones of McCall Cemetery in Pisgah National Forest. We saw no headstones with dates past the 1800's and some may have predated the 1800's. Weather and time have erased the names and dates.

The cache is 8 inches tall by 4 inches wide with a yellow lid and is filled with exchangeable items.

One of the images provided for this report may be a spoiler.

Please remember that animals have a much keener sense of smell than we humans. Please do not place food, candy, gum, or any other scented items such as soaps, candles or "wipes" in the cache, as animals often mistake these items as food, and will destroy the cache container trying to get to it. Also, please hide the cache container so it is not visible, so that other geocachers may enjoy the hunt. - Thanks
