History of Castle Tintagel
The Fortress Tintagel was a mighty castle that once
belonged to Gorlois, Duke of Cromwell, and his Duchess Ygerne, in the realm of
Britain under the rule of a king named Uther Pendragon. Uther fell in love with
the Duchess and soon he and Duke Gorlois went to war. Some legends say that the
sorcerer Merlin
called forth a dragon’s cloud to surround the Duke’s men, creating confusion,
allowing Uther to slip past their defenses while Gorlois was away from the
Castle. In either case Gorlois was slain in combat and Uther took Ygerne as his
wife while ruling at Tintagel.
Less than a year later, Uther himself died on New Years
night, unbeknownst to him, the very night his heir Arthur was born. Arthur did not stay at Tintagel, for the sorcerer Merlin took Arthur
as Uther had promised in return for aiding him defeat Duke Gorlois. After Uther’s death, it is told that he was laid to rest at Stonehenge. And so the
legend of King Arthur begins…
