Archaeologists and people with a general interest in history have always known that the area around Ribe played an important part in the Viking Age. It was just a question of finding further evidence to back it up. The excavations carried out in these parts over the last 25 years by the museum Den Antikvariske Samling (the Antiquarian Collection) have fully confirmed these conjectures. Almost every year, there are exciting new finds in various digs, and there is no doubt that Ribe is one of the world's most important areas for documenting trade, craft and agriculture in what was one of the main communities for the travelling Vikings. Just in the last few years, to give an example, new information has been published about the production of ceramics in Ribe. These new findings show that ceramics were being made in Denmark 500 years earlier than was first thought. The remains of hops have been found, which may change our perception of when the Danes first started brewing beer. Many such small details have helped to prove Ribe's great importance throughout history. This strong link to the past led to the founding of Ribe Viking Centre in 1992.
