Thirsty Traveler Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

TheDeadlySins: I adopted this geocache a handful of years ago with the intent of keeping its spirit alive. However, since I've adopted it I've had to replace the container numerous times; more times than I would've liked to. In the 10.5 years this geocache has been around it has been moved to a few different locations and been hidden in using different containers. However, as long as I've owned it, it has been the simple magnetic key holder on the underside of a park bench.

Today I checked to see if the container was there still intact due to the recent DNF logs. Indeed, the container is gone...for the final time. I hate to admit it, but in the last few years I have been unable to participate in geocaching in the way I would like to. So for these reasons I believe that it's time to see this one archived.

Thanks to all those who found it and had fun in this park over the years.

Geocache Description:

A very short hike in a beautiful riverfront park.

The traveler's palm has very deep roots in folklore and tradition. Have you ever wanted to have your very own wishing well? The traveler's palm may be just the plant for you! It is said, "If a traveler stands directly in front of a traveler's palm and makes a wish in good spirit - that wish will definitely come true."

The traveler's palm gets its name from the fact that thirsty travelers could find stores of water in many parts of the plant including the leaf folds, flower bracts and inside each of the hollow leaf bases each of which may hold up to one quart of water! Although not a true palm, the traveler's palm is considered one of the most striking and unique trees in nature. It is perfect for that special accent in your tropical landscape. The traveler's palm is unique in nature and is monotypic, meaning it is the only species in its genus. The species name, madagascariensis, denotes its origin in Madagascar.

Be forewarned, that although the traveler's palm has no thorns, it is sure to snag most everyone's attention. It is the the main attraction and focus of any tropical landscape in which it appears!

Take in the water everywhere in this park. From drinking fountains, to fountains that shoot up in the air from the ground where children can frolic, to the Indian River which you can stroll along on a newly built boardwalk system.

Clean restrooms, nice benches, a couple of gazebos, and a stage area are some of the other features in this park. Landscaping is tastefully done with a variety of shrubs, flowers, and palm trees adorning the circular walkway. Go to the west side of the park and there is a playground for the kids that is shaded by big old trees.

You won't have to leave the concrete walkway to log this micro, which is a hide-a-key container. Try not to be too obvious in your search if prying eyes are watching!
