This cache is situated close to the Perry Creek Water Falls on the historic Perry Creek River in the East Kootenays.
Gold was discovered in the Perry Creek area in the 1860’s. Miners rushed to the area to look for the elusive metal. Many mines were dug in the sides of the creek and hydraulic water hoses were used to wash the gravel. In one spot on the river the gold nuggets were reported to have been coffin-shaped. There are modern day prospectors (“The Heart Of Gold Claim”) working the area and I ask that you respect their property as you make use of their roadways to gain access to the falls.
Park on the right at 49 33.144 N 115 59.287 W which is just before the 8km marker on the main Perry Creek Road. The trailhead to the falls is on the other side of the road about 100metres further along. From here it is a 1km walk to the Falls along firstly, a well defined road and lastly along a narrower foot trail. As this trail gets to within 200 metres or so of the Falls it becomes relatively narrow and more inclined to be washed out. If you have small children on this trip I suggest you get them well supervised at this point.
It is difficult to get a good photo of the Falls as you arrive so close to them. In fact, as I visited to set the cache, I got quite damp from the spray that was being given off. Even though this is in a fairly tight canyon I was still getting strong signals for my GPS.
The cache is in a flat Tupperware container and originally contained:- A Gold Heart Pin, Some RCMP Collectible Cards, A Butterfly Candle, A Timex Watch (needs battery), A Scottie Key Chain, A Firebird #88 Rally Car and pad with pencils.
