An easy cache in an area with a lot of history
In 1810 Governor Lachlan Macquarie declared 5 towns in the Hawkesbury area. In 1811 Surveyor James Meehan marked out streets and a town square for the Town of Castlereagh. It was to provide accommodation and storage space for the local community. In 1814 The Rev. Henry Fulton opened the first secondary school in Australia on his property at Castlereagh. With the crossing of the Blue Mountains in 1813 and public access to the land across the Nepean River granted in 1815 the focus in the area shifted to the area near the crossing at Emu Plains and the town of Castlereagh did not experience the growth of the other Macquarie towns.
This cache will take you into the area originally surveyed by James Meehan. The burial ground is the only thing remaining from the town.
There is parking near the cemetery gate.
