A pleasant walk along the shore of the Duddon Estuary from Askam in Furness, Cumbria
Dunnerholme is an outcrop of limestone that projects into the estuary of the River Duddon. Maybe it was an island once, but it is now permanently connected to the shore. The top of the holme is used as a green and tee by the local golf club, but you will not have to venture near the fairway to find the cache.
Your hunt starts at the car park in Askam in Furness N 54.11.522, W 003.12.735, where there is an information board and picnic tables. Dunnerholme can be seen from here due north along the shore, exactly a mile away. As you get closer to the holme, a ridge formed by a vertical rock face from former quarrying becomes apparent facing you (south side). Disused lime kilns are to be found at sea level on the north side of the holme. The estuary is a haven for wading birds and waterfowl and the views from the top of the holme are impressive. Black Combe rises behind Millom accross the estuary and the mountains of the Lake District (including the summit of the Old man of Coniston) are visible on a clear day to the north.
