獅子岩展望台は、世界遺産・日本三景宮島の最高峰「弥山」に向かう、宮島ロープウェイの終着駅すぐ傍にある、宮島を代表する景勝地のひとつです。
Shishi-iwa Observatory is one of Miyajima's representative scenic spots, located near the terminus of the Miyajima Ropeway on the way to Mt. Misen, the highest peak of Miyajima, a World Heritage Site and one of the three most scenic spots in Japan.
獅子岩展望台までのアクセスはとても容易です。厳島神社裏から麓の紅葉谷駅まではシャトルバスが運行されています。ロープウェイは循環式・交走式２種類のゴンドラによる空中散歩が楽しめ、終点の獅子岩駅を出たらすぐに展望台なので、体力に自信がない方でも安心して訪問できる場所として、常に多くの観光客で賑わっています。
Access to Shishi-iwa Observatory is very easy. A shuttle bus runs from the back of Itsukushima Shrine to Momijidani Station at the foot of the mountain. The ropeway offers two types of gondolas, a circulating type and an alternating type, to enjoy a walk in the air, and the observation deck is located just outside the Shishi-iwa Station at the end of the ropeway, making it a safe place to visit even if you are not confident about your physical strength.
獅子岩展望台はとにかく海が近いのが特徴です。弥山展望台のような360度パノラマは広がりませんが、弥山展望台と違って特に四国方面は遮るものがなく、そのまま鳥のようにテイクオフできそうな開放感に包まれます。
Shishi-iwa Observatory is characterized by its proximity to the ocean. Although it does not offer a 360-degree panoramic view like the Misen Observatory, unlike the Misen Observatory, the Shikoku area in particular is unobstructed, giving you a sense of openness that makes you feel as if you could take off like a bird.
それでは絶景を堪能した後は宝探しを楽しみましょう！キャッシュは「SHI SHI I WA」と刻まれた、シンボリックな石碑の裏側に隠してあります。発見後はマグルに見つけられないように、注意して元の場所に戻してください。
Now, after enjoying the spectacular view, enjoy the treasure hunt! The cache is hidden behind a symbolic stone monument inscribed with “SHI SHI I WA”. After finding the cache, return it to its original location carefully so that the Muggles will not find it.
そして体力がある方は、ここから「弥山」を目指すも良し、巨石の塊「駒ヶ林」までさらに足を延ばすも良し、そのまま麓まで下山するも良し、ぜひ宮島原生林の中に張り巡らされたトレッキングルートに挑戦してみてください。
And then, if you are physically fit, you may go on to Mt. Misen from here, or further to Mt. Komagabayashi, a mass of huge stones, or go down to the foot of the mountain, by all means, try the trekking routes stretching through the Miyajima primeval forest.
豆知識）
獅子岩展望台といえば昔は多くのニホンザルに出会える場所として有名でしたが、残念ながら今はその姿を見ることはできません。実は猿は1962年に観光や研究目的で放たれた外来種だったそうで、2010年ごろ愛知県のモンキーセンターへ全頭移送されたそうです。…ということで、今では宮島と言えば「鹿と猿」にはならないそうです。

Shishi-iwa Observatory used to be famous as a place where many Japanese monkeys could be seen, but unfortunately, they cannot be seen now. In fact, the monkeys were an introduced species released in 1962 for tourism and research purposes, and all of them were transferred around 2010. ...So nowadays, Miyajima is no longer associated with “deer and monkeys.
