On a sailing holiday in Greece, I introduced our captain to geocaching, and he was so taken with it that I had to give him a cache of his own
The deserted village of Porto Leone was the choice for GZ. The original village was abandoned after the 1953 earthquake which destroyed it’s water supply. Today there’s evidence of buildings being restored as modern homes, but it’s the church that’s proven the ultimate survivor: it’s still used and maintained by villagers who come from Kalamos village to clean the building, renew the oil in the lamps and put fresh flowers on the altar.
If arriving by boat you can anchor in the bay and maybe take a dinghy over to the pontoon below the church. If you're walking or driving, there’s a track around the bay, leading from Kalamos and finishing at the church.
No need to enter the church property to claim this cache. Be aware that the terrain is uneven, there may be traffic and goats along the track, and there’s a drop to the rear of GZ. Please keep an eye on geokids.
Original contents: Zebra keyring, old English penny and halfpenny coins, plus Dancers from Madeira Island TB. Log provided but you’ll need to bring your own pen or pencil.
Please leave the cache as found, hidden from muggle eyes.
