The Helderberg Nature Reserve is situated in Somerset West on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain overlooking False Bay.
The Reserve has a large number of plant, bird and wildlife numbers within it’s boundaries. Some 170 confirmed species of birds, over 600 plant species, over 40 species of mammals with 30 reptile and 8 amphibian species.
There are eight trails in the Reserve, of which the Sugarbird walk (yellow) Trail is rated as the easiest, at a distance of 2.9km and an estimated duration of 45min.
The reserve is open daily as follows:
- 07:30 - 20:00 during December - February
- 07:30 - 19:00 during March & November
- 07:30 - 17:30 during April - October
Please treat the mountain with respect and take suitable precautions when hiking:
- Wear suitable footwear. Boots are highly recommended for the longer trails
- Take sufficient water to drink
- Take warm clothing – the weather changes quickly at higher altitudes
- Wear a hat and use sunblock
- Take snacks but please no littering. Bring back your rubbish!
- NO fires under any circumstances
- In case of an unforeseen accident, it is recommended that you do not walk on your own
