If you are new to it, the Strange Fish Series honors the peculiar and mostly unloved fish species of Wisconsin. Usually I "put the cache near the cache". But this one is a bit different. I'm placing it at the parking lot of this section of the Lower Chippewa River State Natural Area. Beyond is a delightful area of praries, woods.....and a whole bunch of old gravel pits filled with water. Some of them have little fish swimming around in them.
So....how do fish make it into gravel pits? Flooding is not a factor here, they are on high ground. Perhaps people do a bit of impromptu stocking...just toss in a few bluegills and see what happens. But most of the fish come in with the ducks and geese! Yes, fish eggs are sticky and birds pick them up and move them to the next body of water.
When the weather warms up, and fishing season opens officially, I expect to do a bit of catch/cache work. Alas, the peculiar rules of this place mean I can't put caches away from the parking area but I'll certainly update with any "catches". Great place for dog romping btw, although leashes are specified.
I've made this cache easy, its on an obvious beacon. Partly to check my gps which had been misbehaving. Thanks to finders who confirm accuracy. Huh, update the software and put in new batteries once in a while and it works better....
Happy hunting, and fishing.
