Gold was discovered in Moonlight Creek by George Fairweather Moonlight in April 1865.
This discovery triggered a rush to the area and by June the same year 300 men had left Hokitika for Moonlight.
The area was also the site of the second largest nugget ever found in NZ, in 1917 by prospectors re-working old tailings from the 1860's. It weighed 87.5 ounces and was named the 'Victory'.
There is parking beside the cache but please mind children on this busy highway. You will need to provide your own pen and there is no room for trackables.
