The star-like flowers of the Greater Stitchwort (Stellaria holostea or Rabelera holostea ) can be found along hedgerows and verges, flowering in April to June. There are a variety of common names, including poor-man’s buttonhole, wedding cakes, star-of-Bethlehem and snapdragon (referring to the brittle stems). It can reach 50cm in height, and has 5 split petals (making them look like 10). In herbal medicine, it was used to treat the pain in the side or a “stitch”, hence the name. The seed pods release the seeds explosively and can be heard to pop if disturbed.
According to Cornish myth, picking Greater Stitchwort will anger the pixies and they may enchant you in revenge.
