Geocache Description:

The Royal Palace Phnom Penh Cambodia

The Royal Palace in Cambodia has a long and rich history. Originally built in the 1860s, the palace was home to King Norodom, who ruled Cambodia from 1860 to 1904. Much of the palace was designed in a traditional Khmer style, with elaborate stilts, golden spires, and colorful tiles.

In the early 1900s, King Sisowath made major renovations to the palace. He demolished some of the older wooden buildings and replaced them with new structures in a French colonial style, with sweeping rooftops and grand facades. The palace remained the official royal residence until King Sihanouk abdicated the throne in 1955.

Today, the Royal Palace is open to visitors and serves as a museum dedicated to Cambodia’s royal history. Some of the highlights include:

•The Throne Hall, where coronation and other important ceremonies took place. You can see the intricately carved golden thrones that kings and queens sat upon.

•The Silver Pagoda, named for its floor made up of 5,000 silver tiles. It contains many national treasures, including a life-sized gold Buddha studded with 9,584 diamonds.

•The Central Temple, built in a classic Khmer style with colorful tiles and pointed golden spires. The temple is still used for some royal and religious ceremonies today.

•The King’s and Queen’s Quarters, offering a glimpse into the opulent living quarters of past monarchs. Lavish furnishings, portraits of royals, and other artifacts are on display.

A visit to the Royal Palace provides a fascinating look into the long and complex history of the Cambodian monarchy. The grandeur and beauty of the architecture and artifacts will transport you back in time. Don’t miss the chance to witness this important piece of Cambodia’s cultural heritage.
