Geocache Description:

I have, always, loved courthouses.. and check them out whenever I am traveling...   This Warren County Courthouse is one of the most beautiful I have seen.. And if, you are traveliing through at night, especially, a snowy night, you will be amazed at the beautiful site here with the lighting making it truly awesome...

*** There are 2 requirements for claiming this virtual...  Please post picture in your log & message me the answer of your choice..

#1.  Post a picture of yourself or your group picture, with each person identified in the logs, with courthouse or something identifying it in the background... not the required items..

#2 On the benchmark on the step, what is the 2 digit # after the large S?   Visible from sidewalk...                       OR

#2 What is the date on the right corner white stone, by lower corner of the redbrick...?  Visible from the sidewalk..

The original Warren County Courthouse built on this spot in 1827,  was destroyed by fire in 1854… with a replacement quickly built..  Over the years the building and surrounding additions were deteriorating, and, eventually, were condemned…  A new courthouse and jail was then constructed… completed in 1877, at a cost of $107,000…

This Warren County Courthouse is a 2 1/2 story brick & sandstone  building.. It was designed by architect Milton Earl Beebe in a Modern Italian Renaissance style,  measuring 72 feet by 122 feet, with a large 4-sided dome topped by a square clock tower and statue of justice…  Inside, there are 2 long stairways on either side that wind up to the 2nd floor main courtroom…the wide corridor is marble tiled and lined with walnut woodwork..  The third floor houses the grand jury..  The courtrooms and offices woodwork and floors are Georgia Pine…

In 1977 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places… and the plaque is to right of the beautiful double wooden doors…

“While no one knows who made her or where she came to life, Lady Justice has been an integral part of the Warren County land-scape since June of 1877 when she took her perch atop the courthouse.
Standing over ten feet tall and weighing in at 240 pounds, the statue was originally carved out of a log to create the neo-classical beauty.
The wooden model was then used to shape 125 zinc plates that were used to make up Lady Justice.”(The Warren County Courthouse History and Notable Features, Courtesy of the Warren County Historical Society)

On Saturday, May 30, 1998, Lady Justice was removed from the courthouse’s dome after 122 years, for a renovation project…   After a $900,000 make-over, she now stands just inside the building’s Fourth Avenue entrance, and can be seen in the right lower window.. Night siting is better with the lighting… Now a $23,000 lighter fiberglass Lady Justice presides atop the courthouse…

Lady Justice and the objects she carries are ancient symbols for fair and equal treatment under law... She is blindfolded because justice is unbiased and should not be based on a person's appearance or other outside influences.
