Geocache Description:

This virtual cache will take you to a location that celebrates the history of Guelph. At the posted coordinates, there is a plaque commemorating the founding of the city.

At Stage 1 you will find a reconstruction of the façade of Guelph’s Speed Skating Rink, which, unfortunately was destroyed by fire, not too long after it was built. The original building was located nearby, at the current site of the River Run Centre. The façade you see now was reassembled with stones saved from the original façade. It is not identical to the original, but very similar.

At Stage 2, the “…brushed stainless steel sculpture, designed and executed by Hillsdale sculptor John McEwen, was Guelph's official Millenium project. The elevated, open canoe shaped structure carries a cargo of personal submissions such as photos, letters or other mementos of Guelph citizens.” (Guelph Arts Council)

The enormous steam engine that dominates the park was built in 1940 for Canadian National Railways (CN) and used for WWII transportation of troops. In 1943, Locomotive 6167 collided head on at full speed with her sister engine, 6166. Subsequently restored, she then served as a passenger and freight train. CN presented 6167 to Guelph in 1967 in honour of Canada’s centennial. Locomotive 6167 is part of the Guelph Museums collection.

At Stage 3, you will find more information about the founding of Guelph.
