Zuzela - a village on the Bug River, on the border between Mazovia and Podlasie.
The birthplace and childhood home of Stefan Wyszyński.
Young Stefan assisted in the construction of a new, brick parish church. Alongside schoolmates, he carried bricks and handed them to the workers, who then hoisted them up the scaffolding. The economic and organizational side of the construction was overseen by his father, Stanisław Wyszyński, who was also the organist and worked in the parish office.
Stefan was a mischievous boy who enjoyed causing trouble. On one occasion, he flew into a wild rage and burned all of his sister's dolls. When his father found out, things got unpleasant. Stefan hid under the piano in the hope of avoiding his father's punishing hand. In defense of her brother, the wronged sister stood up, persuading their father that Stefan would improve. And indeed, he did.
The future primate was brought up in an atmosphere of respect for the January Uprising. In the vicinity of Zuzela, there were many graves of insurgents, which the Wyszyński family took great care of. However, they had to be extremely cautious because the Russian occupiers suppressed any manifestations of Polish patriotism. If the Russians saw that the family was tending to the graves of insurgents, they would surely arrest them all. Therefore, visits to the graves took place at night, and upon returning to the village, it was forbidden to speak openly about it. For young Stefan, this was a practical lesson in patriotism.
