Geocache Description:

Williamson Valley Road Series: A Morgan Ranch Park Association History Project

Information about the history of the area can be found by reading the 3 MRPA books – Williamson Valley Road, Williamson Valley & Beyond and Prescott to Camp Wood: Cowboy Bill. Morgan Ranch Nature Park is 6 miles north on Williamson Valley Road, ¼ mile east on Nancy Dr. Find more information at our Williamson Valley Historical Society-E Facebook page. The cache page 1986 image was taken at the Sundown archaeological site west of  WV Rd. Approximately 50,000 artifacts were found at the site, including pottery sherds, bones, copper bells and carved animals.

Cachers are required to obtain a permit to access STL. This permit ensures a responsible and sustainable exploration of the area. This link directs you to the necessary permit application process. https://land.az.gov/applications-permits.

Directions for Circumventing* This 1/4 Mile, Multi-Stage Geocache

*"to manage to get around, especially by ingenuity or stratagem"

All stages, which are in a 450" area, can be found using various functions on your GPS, which you may wish to practice before attempting this GC, as well as, doing some math.

  • stage 1 - park at ground zero near a long gray rectangle, find and input coordinates to stage 2 into your GPS
  • stage 2 - follow coords from stage 1 to an ARROW-shaped limb
  • stage 3 - walk 40 feet NE to a CONE-shaped anthill
  • stage 4 - advance 51 feet E from the cone anthill to parallel deer legs
  • stage 5 - pivot NNE from the deer legs, step 78 feet to an inverted TRIANGLE-shaped tree
  • stage 6 - from the tree hike 117 feet NW to the S-shaped path, TRIANGULAR bones will point the way
  • stage 7 - wander NNE on the path 78 feet to the pyramid of wooden knots
  • stage 8 - from the pyramid, traipse 60 feet NW straight as an ARROW to the 30-foot-tall pine tree
  • skip clockwise in a CIRCLE around the tree
  • seek the TRIANGULAR CUBE
  • remove the CYLINDER
  • sign the RECTANGLE
  • option: stamp your letterbox log book, (bring an ink pad in case ours dries out)

We have been receiving numerous questions from geocachers about the new guidelines for letterboxes. Therefore, we thought this would be a good place to share those guidelines.

smileyCURRENT (2023) LETTERBOX-HYBRID GEOCACHING GUIDELINES

"In contrast to classic Letterboxing, a Letterbox Hybrid requires GPS usage for at least part of the search. A letterbox Hybrid consists of at least a container with a logbook and a stamp. Letterbox Hybrids can be logged without using a stamp. The stamp stays with the geocache. Letterbox-style clues may be used to guide cachers to the container." "Letterboxing is a hobby where people follow clues to find hidden containers. The clues can be straightforward or more mysterious, like poems or riddles. Here are some examples of letterbox clues:"

  • "Go past the big tree"
  • "Cross the stream"
  • "Look for a tree on the right, but if you've reached a footbridge, you've gone too far"
  • "Park in the visitor lot, look for a trail, and look for three trunks, the box is tucked inside there."

"Adequate GPS usage: The cache page must provide coordinates of a specific object or location that is needed to find the cache. In most cases, this specific object is the cache container. However, it could also be another object is needed to find the final container or the next stage. Examples of specific objects or locations:

  • A container with further instructions or coordinates to the next stage.
  • A sign or plaque with information.
  • A landmark used as a reference point to determine the next stage.
  • A tool used to find or access the cache container.
  • A street number or number from a sign.
  • A feature of a specific object at the location.
  • Something to count at the location.

Inadequate GPS usage: Coordinates for locations or objects that are not necessary to find the cache do not count as adequate GPS usage. Examples of objects that don't count as GPS usage:

  • Parking lots.
  • Arbitrary locations that are in the neighborhood.
  • Trailheads.
  • Doors and entranceways." (gates)
