L'origine della Madonna del Rosario è stata attribuita all'apparizione di Maria a San Domenico nel 1208 a Prouville, nel primo convento da lui fondato. La Chiesa cattolica celebra la festa della Madonna del Rosario il 7 ottobre di ogni anno.
Questa festa fu istituita con il nome di "Madonna della Vittoria" da papa Pio V a ricordo della battaglia di Lepanto, svoltasi appunto il 7 ottobre del 1571, nella quale la flotta della Lega Santa (formata da Spagna, Repubblica di Venezia e Stato della Chiesa) sconfisse quella dell'Impero ottomano.
Il successore, papa Gregorio XIII, la trasformò in festa della "Madonna del Rosario": i cattolici attribuirono il merito della vittoria alla protezione di Maria, che avevano invocato recitando il Rosario prima della battaglia.

The origin of the Madonna del Rosario has been attributed to the apparition of Mary to San Domenico in 1208 in Prouville, in the first convent he founded. The Catholic Church celebrates the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary on October 7 each year.
This festival was instituted under the name of "Madonna della Vittoria" by Pope Pius V in memory of the Battle of Lepanto, which took place precisely on October 7, 1571, in which the fleet of the Lega Santa (made up of Spain, Republic of Venice and State of Church) defeated that of the Ottoman Empire.
His successor, Pope Gregory XIII, transformed it into a feast for the "Madonna del Rosario": the Catholics attributed the merit of the victory to the protection of Mary, whom they had invoked by reciting the Rosary before the battle.
