ZIP Code history:
In 1963, in order to improve the efficeincy of sorting and delivering mail, the US Postal Service introduced five digit ZIP (Zoning Improvement Plan) Codes for every address across the country. The US was divided into ten numbered regions, 0 through 9. This system also included all overseas territories, military addresses (APO/FPO), diplomatic missions (DPO), and even some foreign nations that were previously administered by the US after World War II (Marshall Islands, Micronesia, and Palau). Within a region, the first digit of every zip code begins with the same number.
