Geocache Description:

GALEGO

O PATRIMONIO

A PRAZA DE FIDENCIANO PALACÍN e A FONTE

NEIGHBORHOODS OF SAN BENITO AND SAN SEBASTIÁN DO PORRIÑO

A few meters from this cache you will find the Barrios de San Sebastián and San Benito, emblematic neighborhoods of Porriño.

The neighborhood of San Benito is one of the most emblematic of Porriño. Together with the neighborhood of San Sebastián, this area represents the origin of the town's urban structure, and the first houses began to be built in the 17th century.

The neighborhood grew thanks to the existence of the road to the town of Tui and also due to the celebration of an old market that provided the area with important commercial wealth.

Little by little, San Benito was developing its urban structure and a relevant industrial activity. The neighborhoods "down there", as they are popularly known, were the heart of the town and San Benito became, so to speak, the urban center of that time.

Your heritage

MUSIC KIOSK

1908

It is one of the most characteristic elements of the neighborhood. It was donated by the Indian Enrique Rodríguez. As a curious fact, it should be noted that the plans for this eclectic style music box were drawn by Isidro Palacios García e Teruel, father of the architect Antonio Palacios, a native of Porriño.

CHAPEL

Towards the year 1890

Everything indicates that the initiative for its construction was activated in the year 1887, thanks to the "Association of San Benito" of the time that requested economic help from emigration. This beautiful chapel, sober and elegant at the same time, is the architectural symbol that defines the neighborhood.

SAN SEBASTIÁN NEIGHBORHOOD

In the neighborhood of San Sebastián, the first steps were taken towards the birth of the town. In this emblematic area, and around the cattle fair that has been held here since the 16th century, O Porriño was born. A cattle fair located near the royal road to Tui and Portugal, with what this implied in terms of commercial activity. San Sebastián, at that time, was a small cluster of houses.

Another fact that places us at that time is what the historian Espinosa Rodríguez collects in a deed of the convent of Santo Domingo de Tui from the year 1552. In it it is stated that the first parish of Porriño was located in the chapel of San Sebastián "which its neighbors built in it fairground".

Already in the 18th century, the Land Register of Ensenada points out how O Porriño was not yet a compact urban nucleus, with its 206 houses spread along the side of the royal road.

THE HERITAGE

 THE CHAPEL OF SAN SEBASTIAN

It is likely that it was built in the year 1552. The hermitage of San Sebastián was a chapel erected for going to mass that first became attached to Santa Eulalia de Atios and then gave rise to the parish of Porriño.

THE PLAZA FIDENCIANO PALACÍN and THE FOUNTAIN

The fountain in San Sebastián has been drinking for years and years for people from Porrin who travel to the neighborhood to fill their bottles and carafes with fresh water. Today, it is also a meeting point for groups of cycling enthusiasts to start their routes from here.

The postman Fidenciano Palacín was one of the most beloved residents of the neighborhood. Today it has a square named after him in memory of his generosity. Fidenciano represents the hard-working and respectful character that has always characterized the neighborhood of San Sebastián. Let's honor his memory, and that of all the residents of the neighborhood, by taking care of that environment.
