Why Geo Toroa?
Toroa is the name for the Albatross, a beautiful bird which can fly around the world for years without touch land. Dunedin is the only mainland breeding colony of Northern Royal Albatross in the world. It was also the location of the FIRST New Zealand Mega Event, so it seemed fitting as we bring it back to Dunedin after years that the Toroa should be our mascot for the event.
Why should I come geocaching in Dunedin?
- Large events are an opportunity to get together.
- There have been nearly 1,000 new geocaches placed in wider Dunedin area since the last Mega Event here.
- We still have some of the oldest Geocaches (placed November 2000) in the world here;
- GCAF Mount Cargill (Dunedin, Otago)
GCBO Flagstaff Hill (Dunedin, Otago)
GCB2 Botanical Gardens (Dunedin, Otago)
GCB1 Unity Park (Dunedin, Otago)
- You will be able to find every D/T combination. Please note the specific equipment you will need for some of these.
- There will be lots of geocaches around the Te Aka Ōtākou, the Otago Harbour Cycle/Walk Trail , which includes a variety of different geocache types; Traditional, multi, Mystery, Letterbox, Earthcache, Adventure lab, Virtual, Wherigo.
Getting to the Event?
Dunedin has a Domestic Airport and on the Intercity bus routes.
The event has a cycleway which joins up to the Te Aka Ōtākou, the Otago Harbour Trail.
For those travelling to the event by car, we ask that you consider getting together with other geocachers and look at car sharing options.
