Die Aardskip - Orania (Binne toere 09:00 tot 12:00, Weeksdae)
Die Aardskiphuis ook bekend as die Sonskip vanwee sy energie gebruik is 'n gedeeltelik strooibaal, gedeeltelik grondsak struktuur wat gebou is om van die elektriese-netwerk af te wees met reënwateropvang, natuurlike klimaatbeheer sowel as binnenshuise groentetuine. Die grondsakke is gevul met grond van die gebied wat 'n rooi ysterryke sanderige grond is. Die agterkant van die gebou is in die helling ingebou.
Die Aardskip word so genoem vanweë sy vorm en die materiale wat gebruik word. Herwinning, kompos, voedselproduksie, energiebenutting, natuurlike klimaatbeheer en waterberging word alles in die Aardskip-ontwerp geïnkorporeer om dit so selfvolhoubaar, energiedoeltreffend en ekovriendelik as moontlik te maak. 'n Sonreflektor word vir die gaarmaak van kos gebruik. 'n Nul CO2 en H2O voetspoor huis wat aan al ses aardskapbeginsels voldoen. Herwinde en natuurlike materiale word deurgaans gebruik, selfs die teëls wat gebruik is, is herwin. Kook word gedoen met behulp van 'n indirekte konveksie son mikrogolfoond, 'n sonoond en 'n sonstoof.
Water word van die dak af opgevang, gaan deur 'n puinfilter en in agt 5000liter tenks. Die water word natuurlik gefiltreer vir was- en drinkdoeleindes. Die gebruikte water of gryswater word dan na die plantestelsel gestuur vir tweede gebruik. Vir die verbouing van groente het die Aardskip twee twintig meter by een meter planters wat meestal onder grondvlak is. Die water wat uit die plantstelsel vloei word dan vir derde gebruik na die toiletbakke gestuur en die toiletwater vloei dan deur 'n septiese tenk na 'n suipelsloot waar dit weer deur plante gebruik word.
Dit is geen gewone huis nie, maar 'n lewendige woonhuis, 'n ekosisteem waar die bewoners en die natuur mekaar ondersteun.
The Earthship - Orania (Inside tour 09:00 to 12:00, Weekdays)
The Earthship house also known as the Sunship because of its energy efficiency is a partially strawbale, partially earthbag structure built to be off grid with rainwater capture, solar heating as well as indoor vegetable gardens. The earthbags are filled with soil from the foundations which is a red ferrous rich sandy soil. The rear of the building is built into the slope. The Earthship is named because of its shape and the materials used. Recycling, composting, food production, energy harnessing, natural climate control and water storage are all incorporated into the Earthship design to make it as self sustainable, energy efficient and eco friendly as possible. A solar reflector is used for for the braai. A zero CO2 and H2O home that adheres to all six earthship principles. Recycled and natural materials are used throughout, even the tiles used were recycled. Cooking is done using an indirect convection solar microwave oven, a solar oven and a solar stove.
Water is captured from the roof, passes through a debris filter and into six 5000litre tanks. The water is naturally filtered for washing and drinking purposes. The used water or grey water is then directed to the planters for second use and the water flowing out of the planters is then sent to the toilet cistern for third use and the toilet water then flows through a septic tank to a French drain where it is again used by plants. For the growing of vegetables the Earthship has two twenty meter by one meter planters which are mostly below ground level.
This is no ordinary house, but a living home, an ecosystem where the occupants and nature support each other.
