When in Newport I love walking around the Newport Wetlands and often visit with my parents and partner to walk the dog. It offers great views across the Severn Estuary and Usk river as well as some of the best spots for birdwatching in the country. The wetlands has over 7km of paths to explore, on my recent visit we followed the Green Lanes and Coast Walk which takes you through the lanes along to Goldcliff before bringing you back into the heart of the reserve at the East Usk Lighthouse.
There are a wide variety of habitats for birds and insects such as hedgerows, reens, grasslands and reed beds. In 2020, two pairs of bittern successfully bred at the site, for the first time in south Wales for over 200 years. The Goldcliff Lagoons, which form the eastern end of the reserve, is the only site in south Wales where avocet breed. On our visits to the reserve over the years we have seen a variety of species of birds some of our favourites and most recently we witnessed a murmuration of starlings from the Lighthouse which was truly special, hopefully you also get some bird watching in whilst in the area.

The Little Bridges series was started by Stanthews in 2009 to highlight small footbridges in remote parts of Wiltshire. Since then, the series has been expanded by others all over the country and starting to spread fast. To qualify, the bridge must be a foot bridge too small for vehicles, please make sure your title exactly matches “Little Bridges # xxxx then the name” including spaces so it will get picked up and added to stats list.
