Geocache Description:

This cache has been placed in memory of Josie, our beloved greyhound. Many breathtaking zoomies were had here by our speedy noodle-horse. After the running, my young geocacher and I would count the boats on the harbour and the diggers at the quarry on the hill.

Take some time out to count the boats when you find this cache :)

-------------------------

Waihinahina Park is an open grassed area overlooking the Horokiwi Quarry and bordered on three sides by hills covered with regenerating bush. The park has a remnant of original forest with nikau and kiekie.

A stream flows around the southern and western sides, and there are some small ponds.

The traditional Māori name for Horokiwi is Waihinahina, which means ‘the stream of the white wood’.

Despite some extensive quarrying, it is still possible to see the stream (as a waterfall) from various vantage points near Hutt Road.

There are picnic tables and rubbish bins near the parking

The park is the site of the old Horokiwi landfill and is dedicated to Dennis Duggan, a prominent member of the Newlands community who died in 1996.
