'E' Is For Expedition Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Hemlock: Hi,

It has come to my attention that this cache has been "converted" to a virtual cache. This cache was published as a physical cache. When a cache box disappears the options are to archive the listing or to replace the box. Converting it to a virtual cache circumvents the review process, and is against the guidelines. http://www.geocaching.com/about/guidelines.aspx

Once you have replaced the box, please email me and I will be more that happy to unarchive this cache.

If there is a problem with the existing location, maybe you should find a different location, even adding another stage if needed.

If you have any questions, feel free to email me at hemlock@geocachingadmin.com or go to your cache page and email me via the link to my profile on the log entry. [red]Please be sure to include the cache name and GCxxxx number, or better yet, the URL of the cache page.[/red]

Thanks for the understanding.

Geocache Description:

Fifth in a series of alphabetic caches and the first multi-stage cache of the series. Get ready for a geocaching expedition and pickup some Bay Area history along the way!

The leader of the expedition How does it work?
You start by going to the coordinates listed above. This location is called Stage One: The Encampment. From this point you will find clues that will lead you to the virtual cache at Stage Two: Discovery. Both a little driving and some hiking is involved between the two stages. The total hiking distance is about three miles roundtrip. It would be fair to characterize the terrain as "hilly". Have fun!

Stage One: The Encampment
Find the historical plaque and the nearby statue at the above coordinates. Use the information you find here to answer the following:

Find the year of the event commemorated on the plaque. Let this be 'A'.
Find the year the statue was erected. Let this be 'B'.
Subtract 'A' from 'B'. Let this new value be 'C'.
If the statue faces the ocean, let 'D' be 417. If it faces inland, let 'D' be 59.
Add 'C' and 'D'. Let this new three-digit number be 'EEE'.

Find the two registered landmark numbers of the plaque. Let these be 'F' and 'G'.
Add 'F' and 'G'. Let this new number be 'H'.
If the expedition camped here in July, let 'I' be 391. If October, let 'I' be 52.
Add 'H' and 'I'. Let this new three-digit number be 'JJJ'.

You will find Stage Two, the virtual cache, at N 37° 36.EEE W 122° 27.JJJ. (WGS-84)

Note: Unless you want an extremely long hike, you'll need to hop in your car and find a trailhead closer to Stage Two than you are now. Read the hint below if you want information regarding one of the available trailheads.

Stage Two: The Discovery
Congratulations, you have found this virtual cache! After a well-earned break, examine both the marker and the memorial you find here. To score this cache you will need to email me the following bits of information:

  1. The number of visitors that have been to this site before you. (on the memorial)
  2. The year the memorial was erected.

Please do not put the answers in your log, even if they are encrypted.

Other caches in this series: 'A' Is For Alum, 'B' Is For Beachhead, 'C' Is For Cave Dwellers, 'D' Is For Desert Phone Booth, 'F' Is For Faultline, 'G' Is For Ghost Town, and 'H' Is For Highpoint.

Have fun! You might want to pack a picnic lunch and you certainly should bring something to drink. Stage Two is a nice spot for a picnic; the views are terrific if the fog hasn't rolled in. Bring a camera if you can! I'd love to see photos taken from the area around Stage Two. Please avoid photos that would provide the answers to the above questions though. That would be a Bad Thing...
