CACHE IS NOT ON CHURCH PROPERTY

I have been fly fishing for over forty one years.  My favorite species is smallmouth bass.  A 19 inch smallie on a 5 weight fly rod is great fun and I always catch and release. That means I don't keep fish. Sometimes we fish in weather that makes me wonder if it really is that much fun.  I have been in the water when the air temperature is below 32 degrees and a problem is ice forming in the eyelets of the rod that makes it difficult to cast. So if it the temperature getting closer to zero degrees count me out.

Many people will go to other countries to fish but I'm too cheap because it can cost over three thousand dollars. One of my trips to Michigan for steelhead was almost free because my buddy had a cottage on Hubbard Lake.  Since it is so far away it took us almost seven hours to drive each way. It isn't always cold in Michigan. I remember 1 night the temperature was over 100 degrees and that was after 12 midnight.  Needless to say fishing wasn't very good the next 2 or three days.

Steelhead is a type of large trout and is a very popular game fish in Michigan.  Eight times I have been up north fishing for steelhead and my best day is five landed. One day though fishing was tough and I got skunked. My fishing buddy, Dan, landed four nice steelhead so he was pretty hard to be around.

Another facet of this sport is fly tying. If you want a certain type fly but can't find 1 then make it yourself.  Tying flies take different materials for just 1 fly and I have discovered that it is much cheaper to buy 1 fly at a fly shop rather than buy 5 or 6 items that can be enough to make a 100 flies.  But it is a lot of fun to land a fish on a fly that you tied.

We usually fish by wading but sometimes we fish from a boat.  Long ago I had a small pontoon called a WaterSkeeter and it was just seven feet long and had 2 pontoons.  I had to paddle on lakes but on rivers it was pretty easy to float downstream with the current. If you came on a likely looking fishing spot simply move to shore and tie off to the bank with 1 or 2 lines to stay in 1 spot.  Sitting in a pontoon boat is good for throwing your line about 30 feet upstream or downstream. That is for most guys but my casts are more like seven feet. You could tie the boat off then walk out from between the pontoons and wade for covering good holes.  Holes are where fish are thought to congregate.

Fly fishing can be relatively cheap or very costly. Well-heeled fishers will spend over $1,500.00 for a graphite rod plus reel and line. Another type of rod is bamboo. They are very beautiful but can cost over two thousand dollars. Too much for me! Some people that start fly fishing will buy a complete package that comes with 1 rod, 1 reel and 1 line for under $150.00. Of course, you can just borrow an outfit from a friend and sometimes you can even find gear at garage sales. Some of the  rods I have are TFO brand and I have a 4 weight and 2 each of 8 weights. Why I have 2 of the same 8 weight rods is a mystery. Oh, I forgot the 6 weight TFO. I have made a few rods and my long rod has 3 sections. It is called a spey rod and is a 14 foot long 11 weight rod for heavy fish, like muskie.  Since it's so long it takes 2 hands to cast. I have yet to wet the line with it.  But some day. ,
