LOVE as we know it began as a Christmas card. In 1970 Robert Indiana built the first of many large LOVE sculptures. The 12 foot by 12 foot by 6 foot structure drew such large crowds that Indiana made more. Over the course of several decades, Indiana created over 50 editions of the sculpture for sites around the world. He failed to copyright his LOVE design, so many variations can be found on postage stamps, posters, T-shirts.
This famous LOVE sculpture was gifted to University Park by a couple celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary. There are fewer than 25 original LOVE sculpture in the United States.
