Port Sunlight is a model village located between Lower Bebington and New Ferry, on the Wirral. It was built by Lever Brothers to accommodate workers in its soap factory and derived its name from Lever Brothers' most popular brand of cleaning agent, Sunlight. It contains 900 Grade II listed buildings, and was declared a conservation area in 1978.
Its historical significance is in its combination of model industrial housing for working people combined with the architectural and landscape values of the garden suburb. A different architect designed ach set of houses with each house being unique. Architecturally, there is half-timbering, carved woodwork and masonry, ornamental plaster work, moulded/twisted chimneys and leaded glazed windows. Bricks were even imported from Belgium for those built in Flemish style.
The greatest building in Port Sunlight is probably the Lady Lever Art Gallery. Lever was a keen art collector and he travelled all over the world collecting art that he liked to show to the villagers. The gallery was opened by Princess Beatrice in 1922 to exhibit his collection and modern-day artwork including furniture, paintings, sculptures and ceramics.
