대구향교(大邱鄕校)는 조선 태조 7년(1398년)에 성현(聖賢)의 위패를 봉안하고 지방민의 교육과 교화를 위해 교동에 창건되었다. 당시에는 대성전과 명륜당이 있었으며, 임진왜란 때 소실(燒失)된 것을 선조(宣祖) 32년(1599년) 달성공원 자리로 옮겨 재건하였다가 동왕 38년(1605년) 다시 교동으로 환건하였다.
인조(仁祖) 3년(1625년)에 향교의 명륜당을 중건하였고, 1932년에 일제강점기시 총독부에 의해 대성전과 동·서무, 명륜당 등 주요 건물이 현재 위치인 대구 중구 명륜로 112로 이건하였다. 교육사업으로 1910. 5. 1 대구공립농림학교(현 대구자연과학고등학교)가 개교하여 1910.10. 4 대봉동(현 사대부고)로 이전 하였으며, 해방 이후인 1945년 대성중학원(이듬해 대성중학교로 승격)을 설립하였고, 1947년에 대구대학교 설립을 인가받아 명륜당에 개설하였다. 그 외 건국고등공민학교, 대구여자사범대학, 대구경리여자중학교가 명륜당에서 개교하였다.
1948년 남조선과도정부 법령 제194호에 의거하여 재단법인 경상북도 향교재단의 설립을 인가받았고, 대구대학은 1954년 대명동으로 이전 되었다. 1974년 명륜당과 외삼문, 사무실이 중건되었으며, 1981년에 대구시가 직할시로 승격되면서 재단법인 대구직할시 향교재단 설립을 인가받았다. 1990년에는 동서재와 낙육재가 복원되었으며, 1995년에 유림회관을 신축하였다.
대성전에는 정위에 공자를 모시고 중국의 4성(四聖)을 배향하고, 동서종에는 송조2현(宋朝二賢), 우리나라 18현(十八賢)의 위패를 봉안하고 있다.(1949년 전국유림대회에서 결의) 조선시대는 국가로부터 토지와 전적(田籍)노비(奴婢) 등을 지급받아 교관이 정원 30인의 교생을 가르쳤으나, 갑오개혁 이후 신학제 실시에 따라 교육적 기능은 없어지고 봄·가을에 석전(釋奠)을 봉행하며 초하루·보름에 분향을 하고 있다. 대성전은 대구광역시 문화재자료 제1호(1982.03.04)로 지정되었으며, 현재 전교(典校), 감사2인, 장의(掌議) 220명 등으로 구성되었다.
Daeguhyanggyo Local Confucian School was established in Gyo-dong in the 7th year of King Taejo of the Joseon Dynasty (1398) to enshrine the memorial tablet of Seonghyeon and educate local residents. At that time, there were Daeseongjeon Shrine and Myeongnyundang Lecture Hall, and what was destroyed during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1599, was relocated to the site of Dalseong Park in 1599, and rebuilt in Gyo-dong in the 38th year of King Dong (1605).
In the 3rd year of King Injo (1625), Myeongnyundang Lecture Hall of Hyanggyo was rebuilt, and in 1932, major buildings such as Daeseongjeon Hall, Dongseomu, and Myeongnyundang were relocated to 112 Myeongnyun-ro, Jung-gu, Daegu. As an educational project, Daegu Public Agricultural School (currently Daegu Natural Science High School) opened on May 1, 1910 and moved to Daebong-dong (currently Sadaebu High School), and after liberation, Daesung Middle School (promoted to Daesung Middle School the following year) was established and opened in Myeongryundang in 1947. In addition, Konkuk High School, Daegu Women's Normal University, and Daegu Gyeongri Girls' Middle School were opened at Myeongnyundang.
In 1948, the establishment of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Hyanggyo Foundation was approved in accordance with the Namjoseon Provincial Government Act No. 194, and Daegu University was relocated to Daemyeong-dong in 1954. In 1974, Myeongnyundang Lecture Hall, Oesammun Gate, and offices were rebuilt, and in 1981, Daegu-si was promoted to a city under direct control, and the establishment of the Daegu-si Hyanggyo Foundation was approved. In 1990, Dongjae Seojae and Nakyukjae were restored, and in 1995, the Yurim Hall was newly built.
In Daeseongjeon Shrine, Confucius was enshrined in the four provinces of China, and Songjo 2-hyeon and 18 Hyeon of Korea were enshrined in the East and West Bells. (Resolved at the 1949 National Forest Conference) During the Joseon Dynasty, instructors taught 30 students in the early autumn, but after the spring reform, the function was lost. Daeseongjeon Hall was designated as Daegu Metropolitan City Cultural Heritage Material No. 1 (1982.03.04), and currently consists of all students, two auditors, and 220 funeral directors.
대구향교의 공자상은 1997년 중국 산둥 성(山東省) 칭다오 시(靑島市)에서 대구광역시와의 자매결연 5주년을 기념해 백옥(白玉)으로 제작하여 기증한 것이다.
The statue of Confucius of Daeguhyanggyo Local Confucian School was produced and donated by Qingdao City, Shandong Province, China in 1997 in commemoration of the 5th anniversary of its sisterhood relationship with Daegu Metropolitan City.
