As in Australia withi it's Big Pineapple and Big Banana, Cromwell is known for it's fruity attraction. With many surrounding fruit orchards it brings visitors, tourists and fruit pickers from all around the world to the region.
The fruit sculpture was presented to the town by the local Rotary Club in 1990, original designer Otto Muller. The sculpture has four large fruit, an apple, a pear, a peach and an apricot. The largest has its top about 26 feet about the ground.
Definately needing a 'spruce up'
'ripening' the apricot 2022 repaint and gloss protection
Keeping the fruit 'fresh' is a massive job to repaint, fading the main problem. The sculpture was last repainted in 2022 for $80,000, 2016 at a cost of $37,000 and before that in 2004.
There is a car park close by with a small skate park and playground. A great stop for kids to run around and play and many good places to pick up a snack.
To claim this simple Virtual just add a photo in your log, of yourself with your gps or a paper with your caching name, with the Big Fruit in the background.
Times have changed over the years with other orchards being developed locally. Of more than 1800 votes cast in a poll a few years ago, largely by Cromwell residents, 79% were in favour of additions to the sculpture. What suggestion woud you have to an addition of other fruit? Add to your log if you like! (we could think of at least two)
