Geocache Description:

Welcome to my Virtual Cache, placed at one of my favourite locations to visit. There are excellent views from up here, a lovely garden to wander round and even have a picnic or spot a train. It would be great to here about your experience here in your online logs. Hope you enjoy!

Bridgnorth Castle - 12th Century

The castle was founded in 1101 by Robert de Belleme, the son of the French Earl, Roger de Montgomery. In 1102 Henry l took control of the castle.
It's principal feature, a square great tower, was built during the reign of Henry ll in 1160 and the castle was extended between 1166-1174.

Bridgnorth Castle - 13th to 16th Century

Several extensions were made to the castle from 1226. In 1242 the outer Bailey which does not survive today, was legally made part of the town.
In 1321, barons rebelled against reigning King Edward ll during the despenser war and took control of the castle but by mid 14th century it lost strategic importance and was largely forgotten about.

Bridgnorth Castle - 17th to 21st Centuries

In 1642, King Charles l described Bridgnorth and its castle as 'the finest in my domain'. During the Civil War, Bridgnorth was one of the Midlands main Royalist strongholds and in 1642 many of the troops were garrisoned there.
Various changes occurred over the next couple of hundred years

Parts of the Great Tower can still be seen today but it now leans at an angle of 15 degrees.
In 1956 the castle was donated to the town council.
