Naples got its name back in 1887 when John and Alice Williams had a dream to build a world class hotel and a planned community called Naples-by-the-Sea. Williams spent thousands of dollars on advertising, including ads hyping the "high temperature of the water of the Santa Barbara Channel at all seasons of the year." Huge wooden letters, twenty feet high, were erected on the bluffs spelling out NAPLES. They eventually blew down in the wind storms of 1890. The train coming through the area was a vital part of the plan, but it did not happen in Williams lifetime.
