We have thoroughly enjoyed walking along this primitive path at WC Johnson Park. This cache is nearly halway if you make the loop to the river staying to the left at the fork - about 1.75 miles from the trailhead. The trail is normally hardpacked mud and gravel but today was extremely muddy after last week's snow, ice, and rain. Watch for bikers on the trail.
This section of the Wolf River is the most treacherous for kayaking or canoeing because it containes 4 rock weirs that are intended to help reduce "headcutting" which is a fancy name for erosion. The weirs are made from gray jagged rock called rip-rap (you can see this rock has also been used to stabilize the river banks) and are challenging to boat over in low water conditions. Wolf River Conservancy says only boat this section when the river gage at Collierville Arlington is between 6 and 8 feet (it is worth the effort to paddle, but tagging along on a convervancy trip is a very good idea for the inexperienced paddler).
The cache is alongside the river in a section that is probably pretty muggly during the summer. The cache is off the beaten path to one of the white sand beaches along this section of river. Once you locate the cache, follow the waypoint to the next trail over along the river past a rope swing (and some unfortunate swimmer seems to have left their watermelon swim trunks near this swing) and continue along the edge of the river (staying to the left) to see the weirs that cause a little rapids section when the water level is high as it is at present. It shortly rejoins the main trail.
