When you have found this geocache, you will have a good view over the abandoned village of Kalami. The few residents of the village obviously don't particularly love it when their village becomes a tourist attraction. That's why we hid the can outside of the village. So if you want to visit the village yourself, please be as discreet as possible.

The narrow valley in which Kalami is located could indeed have invited the planning of a reservoir. However, I couldn't find any other sources that would confirm this. Perhaps it was simply the sheer poverty of the region that made residents look for alternatives in less inhospitable areas.

Wenn Ihr diese Dose gefunden habt, blickt Ihr auf das verlassene Dorf Kalami. Die wenigen Bewohner des Dorfes lieben es offensichtlich nicht besonders, wenn ihr Dorf zur Touristenattraktion wird. Deshalb haben wir die Dose außerhalb des Dorfes versteckt. Wenn Ihr also das Dorf selbst besuchen wollt, verhaltet Euch bitte möglichst dezent.
Oberhalb des Dorfes gibt es schon seit Jahren denGeocache GC60F8D: View over Kalami, der Auskunft über die Historie des Dorfes gibt.
Ich wiederhole hier der Einfachheit halber die Beschreibung aus dem Listing dieses Caches:
“Im Südosten der griechischen Insel Kreta befindet sich ein Dorf Namens Kalami. Das Dorf ist, bis auf 15 Seelen die zurückgekehrt sind, komplett verlassen. Die restlichen Straßen und Häuser sind menschenleer. Nur noch einige Möbelstücke sind hier und da in den Häusern zu finden. Das Dorf fällt langsam auseinander und die Häuser haben all ihre Türen geöffnet. Man kann durch eine offene Tür, über den Balkon in das nächste Haus. Fast alle Häuser sind miteinander verbunden und in ihnen ist noch das ein oder andere Schmuckstück zu finden. Die Atmosphäre in dem Dorf ist wirklich bizarr und irgendwie bedrückend.
Das einzige Gebäude das noch gepflegt wird und sich in einem wirklich guten Zustand befindet, ist die Dorfkirche von Kalami. Dort befindet sich (laut Informationen aus dem Internet) der einzig laufende Wasserhahn in der Gemeinde für die letzte Wasserversorgung im Dorf.
Der Grund für die damalige Abreise der Einwohner ist, dass die Landesregierung beschlossen hat, dass Kalami der ideale Ort wäre hier eine Talsperre zu errichten. Daher wurden die Dorfbewohner nach und nach umgesiedelt. Das schlimme an dem Ganzen ist, dass der Damm nie gebaut worden ist und die ehemaligen Bewohner von Kalami sich woanders bereits wieder eine neue Existenz aufgebaut hatten und nur 15 Leute nach Kalami zurückgekehrt sind.”
Das schmale Tal, in dem Kalami liegt, könnte tatsächlich zur Planung eines Stausees eingeladen haben. Allerdings konnte ich keinerlei weiteren Quellen finden, die das bestätigen würden. Möglicherweise war es auch einfach die pure Armut der Region, die die Bewohner nach Alternativen in weniger unwirtlichen Gegenden suchen ließ.
Das Video am Anfang dieses Listings zeigt auf beeindruckende Weise den verlassenen Ort Kalami.
